Grant Hunter

Intake Manager

Grant has been in the welfare sector for 15 years, spanning direct practice, policy and research and executive leadership. His time in practice started with working in children and family services supporting young people to leave care and working with adult clients with disability and dual-diagnosis presentation.  Grant’s policy and research work involved NDIS transition, care leavers, youth justice and developing systems to support children who cannot live in the family home due to their disability support needs. Most recently Grant oversaw operations for a national charity delivering financial counselling and financial assistance for the veteran community.

Favourite Thing About Working for Via Care:

I have always loved our people’s can-do attitude and capacity to be flexible and work with a client in the social and family context. Often that foundational case practice like involving families and preserving social supports can get lost with a big provider but at Via Care we have that space to deliver flexible care with strong fundamental underpinnings. I’m really proud of the work we have done with complex hospital discharges, where our team have done in-reach with the client, invested in warm handovers and built connections to their family so the client has a staged and supported exit to their home or new home.

Similarly we’ve had cases where our staff have shown great initiative in coming up with ways to increase contact between clients and their family, have supported reconnection and seen clients rebuild familial relationships in a sustainable way.

I have also been blown away a few times by the can-do attitude of my staff and colleagues in responding to rapid situations, more than a few times getting complex supports around clients almost overnight to get people back in their community and keep them safe.

Things That Make Me Feel Inspired:

I have a deep passion for evidence based practice and solving puzzles related to people. I actively follow a few fields of research and public policy related to social work and disability. What I particularly love is when we see the practical outcomes of good, solid practice on the ground for clients. I consider it a great privilege to be in a position to facilitate good practitioners doing good work which supports clients realise their goals and build an improved quality of life.
